The horizontal axis is for the independent variable. (X)

The vertical axis is for the dependent variable. (Y)

A function is like a calculator machine: It has an input, a processing action, an output.

When we use the notation: y = f(x) we means that x is the input, f is the processing that will be done with the input, and y is the output. The input(x) is called independent variable because it is a real number of function domain. The output(y) is called dependent variable because it depends on the input value.

A Math convention, so that everybody can speak the same language, is to put the input in an axe with the same name... x
the output in a perpendicular axe with name y.

You are free to change this convention, but everybody will have a hard time to understand your particular Math.
