It should work fine with Windows 2000 also. If you are using the USB option, unplug that.
Go to your Control Panel, and open Add/Remove Programs. Look for your HP software there, and UNINSTALL IT.
Then go to the Printer section of the Control Panel, and remove that printer if you see it.
Restart the computer.
Install the software and Plug the printer into the USB port at some point during the installation when it asks.

I ran that exact same printer on Win 2k for years. You can download the drivers here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=61236&lang=en&os=181
Install the printer using the Add Printer wizard. Do not connect the printer to the computer until the wizard tells you to. Remember to use the Have Disk button, and select the driver that you downloaded.

It is a USB printer right? If it is just plug it in and use the found new hardware wizard. If it is a parallel printer (plugs into the large printer port on the back of your PC), then use the add printer wizard located in the printers folder.

when you purchased your computer, you purchased a printer to go with it.. you had a CD that pertains ONLY to the printer.. so when the computer is hooked up and running, slip in the CD pertaining to the printer and then follow the instructions for INSTALLING the printer.. I am not sure if you did that already so if you did not.. this is necessary to do.

My bet is that the printer driver for that model was designed for Windows 9x, at least the one on the CD was. I have had mixed success getting Windows (TWAIN) 9x drivers running on NT based systems (2000, XP). Go to HP and see if they have a driver for Windows 2000, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=61236&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=8&submit.x=7&lang=en&cc=us and in fact they do. Use that driver.

I would be sure the USB port is turned on. They have a poster that explains how to install the printer. Its very important to not have it connected until the the software program tells you to connect it.

any special need for windows 2k for you?
altho 2k is vastly superior to Windows M E , if you load Windows X P it finds thousands of devices and the W drivers or with your permission goes to the net and finds them for you.
