Seriously! I work at a vintage clothing store. Everything is from 1880-1970 nothing newer. Most items are in good condition for their age...we have really unique items like victorian dresses and jewelry. But people constantly come in and try to talk us down or complain that the prices are too high for a thrift store....we are NOT a thrift store! We sell used clothes...not for 50 cents like they want...but no jeans or t-shirts this is specialty stuff! What do you think?

they are not simply OLD, they are extremely old! would you expect to pay 50 cents for a dress from the 1920's? they are rare and of very good quality compared to the cotton clothing of today.

Thrift stores overlap with vintage stores, i.e. you can find vintage items at thrift stores if you know what to look for.

Vintage stores are fine places for finding only vintage items.

Why don't people recognize one from the other? Ignorance.

How can you handle it gracefully? Kindly tell them the location of the nearest thrift store.

it may be an issue with the store's name. What's it called? A lot of people group "used" or "old" with the concept of "thrift"

I am aware of the value and beauty of clothes of that era - and your cost to acquire them in good condition isn't small. Consider yourself an educator for the public -- do it professionally and politely and who knows you may get some new customers as a result!

Vintage is the new catch word for OLD STUFF. It does not make it more valuable just because it is "vintage." Why try to hide your old worn out "unique" junk behind the word "vintage?" Why not call it what it is "OLD CLOTHES?"
