Try some ornamental grasses. There are many to choose from and are easy to grow. Look at fountain grass, purple fountain grass, hameln grass, little bunny, zebra grass, lindheimer muhly, maiden grass, mexican feathergrass, and so many others.

Also try some low groundcovers or mosses. Look at sedums and ice plants or ajuga.

There are also good plants that do well in shade that look tropical like acuba, aralia, and elephant ears. A banana plant will do well also. Look at your hardiness zone and check with a local professional (landscape architect) or nurseryman.

Like someone else said, depends on where you live. Palm trees, hibiscus, helconia (false bird of paradise if you have some morning sun/afternoon shade area) or regular or white bird of paradise if full sun. Plumerias, bouganvillia, etc... There are lots of plants that give a garden a tropical feel, but most will freeze if there is a harsh winter.

Look in some of the flower and garden magazines and check with your local green house or Home Depot. Tropical plants will only grow where the weather permits, so it depends on where you live.
