I wouldnt advise it...as carpet pad is typically about 1/2" thick, and made to be "cushiony", if you will. The foam pad that is made for laminate flooring is there only for sound absorption, to help reduce the "echo" when walking on the flooring. This type of foam pad is usually only 1/8" thick or less, and is pretty firm.

If the typical laminate floor system were installed over carpet pad, you would feel it sink when you walked on it... and the flexing of it may cause it to break along the joints.

Go shopping and ask about the pad for laminate flooring, and you will see what I am talking about. O... one more note.... the foam pad is NOT a vapor barrier! Keep that in mind. You might also want to check the website of the manufacturer of the flooring you are considering, and look under their "Installation Guide" (Pergo, for example, has one), for the "Do's and Don'ts" of installation.

Have Fun

Definitely do not use the carpet pad as an "under laminate" cushion. You'll end up with laying your floor all over again in the not too distant future.

I agree with thewranglersw that the laminate's joints will eventually break &/or seperate after a while.
