I have a DUCK in my yard.
He/she seems to have adopted me.
(Just don't ask...lol)
He/she needs a good duck home.
What's the easiest, and most
humane way to capture a duck?

No, I live in the woods, and ducks are not usually here. This is a tame animal, that was abandoned by a neighbor. The duck has been in my yard for about four months, and I am feeding it, but it won't let me come right up to it. The animal shelter has already informed me that if they come and get it, it will be destroyed.

FYI...any answers that include killing the animal will get an automatic thumbs down. I said HUMANE way to CATCH the duck.

Ducks need WATER...not woods. My plan is to take it to a pond, belonging to an acquaitance, who has grandkids that visit.

Well if IT has adopted you... You have a Great duck home.and they are fun as pets cheap to have too.. But if you do decide to catch it....

DO NOT use a net or anything like that. It is too easy to cause harm to the duck,(meaning broken wings or limbs) just let it get used to you and grab it when you are close enough. Tuck it in to your body quickly and hold it's head down to IT'S body... Very less stressful for the duck..

Who the hell owns a net. How lame, just feed he duck. It will go away when it wants to, if not who cares but bread will bloat in its stomach so ask a feed store what an alternative might be.

Try using a sack of sorts -- pillow case type thing. If you use a net his wing tips or feet could get snagged in it.

As far as getting him close enough to do that... if you feed him some he might trust you enough to get close enough to throw a sheet over him. If you can get to his body, hold his wings close to his body and hold his bill shut so that he can't try to bite you. (Wear gardening gloves or something thick.)

Alternative... if he's not bothering you. Just don't feed him and he'll end up leaving.

Get a net and some bread. Throw the bread to lure the duck near you, and maybe trust you a little. Then when its close enough, capture it with a net, thats what i did!!!!

Ducks are birds. It might be worth a try sprinkling bread crumbs to a Have-a-heart trap a la that nursery rhyme. Or was it a Grimm fairy tale?

You could get a lot of bread and make a path from your house to your friend's. It would follow you there!

Or you could get it a big "duck bath" (Instead of a bird bath) and maybe some of its friends will join in. I mean you said he/she seems to like being around you, you could enjoy him/her or them too.

are there usually ducks where you live?
...well...it might end up flying off...but if doesn't leave soon you should probably call the city and explain the situation so that you can have a proffesional take care of it.

Call the animal control office, they should know what to do, they might even come out and do it for you.

No need to capture it; just feed it and let it live there.
