i have a 1996 ford contour and when i hook a set of jumping cables to the battery it starts but when i take the cables of the battery it dies, the car has been sitting in my garage for about a year. i hooked the cables up 5 times and after disconnecting the cables the car dies every time. the first time it stayed running for a couple minutes after that it died right after disconnecting the cables. could the car sitting in the garage cause the battery to die and could the problem be the battery even after starting with the cables. please write back asap.

Well, you have 2 issues then. 1, the battery in the car is dead. 2, the alternator is not working. When you jumped the car to get it to start, your car was running off the jumping battery. So when you removed the cables the car died. Replace both of them items, and you should be ok.

Put a battery charger on the battery and leave it there until at least 8 hours have gone by. Will it start now? If not replace the battery. If it does, put a voltmeter on the battery (even a cheap one from the auto parts store) Is it reading over 13 volts? If not, you need an alternator.

clean the terminals and try again if that doesnt work you have a dead battery and possibly the alternator too.
