tcp = transmision control protocol
ip = internet protocol

tcp/ip is tcp running on top of ip

ip is a protocol that delivers packets over an internet (more than one network connected together). it does not guarantee that the packets will arrive in the right order or even that they will all arrive.

tcp runs on top of ip and gurantees that all of the packets in a steam will arrive, and that they will arrive in the right order. it also has the ability to automatically throttle to the available bandwidth.
