Manga is the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons. Anime is an abbreviation of the Japanese word animēshon meaning animation. Comics need not be animated. Animations need not be comics. Perhaps these words should be kept separate then.

Anime is Japanese animation; cartoons (usually a cartoon series).
Manga are comic books. If a Manga does well then it might get made into an Anime.

In Japan animation is given very serious consideration. The saga of the Space Battleship Yamato was shown in major Japanese movie theaters over 20 years ago, and they had 4 movies and 3 seasons of the cartoon. In the United States the Japanese Anime “Ghost in the Shell” did fairly well in theaters. It did better in the DVD market because fans and collectors are pretty loyal. Just recently Japan created the Anime series “Ghost in the Shell” using the same cast. That was surprising, and an exception to the rule. The Anime series has had two seasons on Cartoon Network, and is currently running in repeats.

The Japanese take their cartoons seriously and often they don't have the run on forever versions that American TV runs. A cartoon series has a plot line that is meant to run for only one season. If the series is popular then they can bring it back, sometimes with different characters, and plot lines. Gundam is a favorite and has seen at least 4 different incarnations.

I have found Magna at Barnes and Nobel, and the Cartoon Network shows some Japanese Anime. Careful though, this isn't Bugs Bunny. These stories have serious and usually adult plot lines. Cartoon Network is planning on showing an Anime series on vampires this season, and you will see a lot of death in it. That is another major difference between Japanese and American cartoons. In the recent Superman series only a handful of people ever died. Two were super villains and one was a minor character. That last death was a major plot plan, and a risky one. The shows creators were worried that the WB network might not let them do it. In the Anime series Robotech one main character and a secondary character die. You see the death of hundreds and hundreds of people, and in the series tens of thousands, to millions of people die. And that’s just in the first season. There were 3 seasons and I have lost track of the death count. It was a very good series and the deaths in it only sharpened the story. Sometimes in American cartoons the lack of real violence borders on the ridiculous.
