Extra pens: Mostly Black, followed by blues, and last reds.
Highlighters.
Comfort food: If he is near fast food give him some cards like jack-n-the-box gift cards, McDee's, Sonics's etc. Cookies, popcorn, mini cereal boxes, easy microwaveable dinners (that don't require refrigeration of course) - i.e. macaroni, chef boy-ardee, Progresso, etc. Dry fruit prepackaged. Chocolate.
A brand new, easy to read, good sturdy bible- my grandma gave me one my first year and for the first time in my life I actually began to read it.
Take a nice photograph of yourselves (you or/and the church) and either blow it up or make a mini album. In the frames/pages write how much you are proud of him, miss him, and want him to do well. MAKE SURE YOU MAKE IT CLEAR THAT YOU ARE THERE FOR HIM! He can come to you with anything. First year kids go through a lot of issues both good and bad, but its important for him to know that there is support for him and someone he can talk to on the home front, even if that home is not his biologically own.
You can also send him a visa check card filled with emergency money only. Like $100.00 to get him out of whatever - and he can use it where ever the visa sign is present.
Is there something in particular your town is known for? Send him a shirt or a hat with whatever your home town is known for, something that he can put in his room and always be reminded of home in a comforting way.
Phone card or a prepaid cell phone is a must. Make sure that there will be no issues with him contacting you and you him every now and then. And make sure to check in on him EVERY WEEKEND. It doesn't have to be the same person calling him, but it’s good to get into the habit of like a "Saturday morning /Sunday afternoon phone call.
The best thing is you don't have to send him all these things at once. It would actually be better to send him things throughout the school year, like on a monthly basis. You'd be surprised just how happy a kid can be when he gets something in the mail.
It’s not about expense, and you don't have to send every item I listed, its just about showing support and that someone besides God in the world does care and want the best for him.
Don't forget hygiene too - mouth wash, toothpaste, deodorant, and tooth brushes can be life savers sometimes.

Nice idea. Try to find out what stores are in the area: Target, Walmart, Kmart.. a few gift cards so that they can use. Microwavable food, like Mac n Cheese. A hot pot to heat thing or make things in in case they can't have a microwave in their room. Little boxes of cereal and other small snacks. A thermometer for the winter months in case he/she gets sick. It gets expense to see the campus nurse! Robitussin and Vicks vapo rub. Some of those single serving juice packets, you just drop them into a bottle of water. Instant coffee or tea, they will come in handy for all nighters or that early morning class. A bottle of hand sanitizer, extra highlighters for textbooks. Some nurturing bible verses tucked away to help with the rough spots. A tape recorder with you all saying hello and some tapes so that the recorder can be used in those lecture style classes.

Sure -- include Mars bars and M&Ms because chocolate always helps, no matter what the problem is. But mostly, send him a note with your best wishes, and include a copy of the local paper, just for a touch of home.
He's really going to appreciate your care package. It's a very kind thought on your part.

A whole lot of things, all of which will be appreciated. First personal items like deodorant, shaving cream, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razor, razor blades, soap.
Then some cash for a good night out on the town, gas for the car, and "spend it as you want" money.
Finally, some goodies like his favorite toll house cookies (homemade, of course), brownies, favorite snacks, and maybe even some fruit, all of which will be shared with room mates and dorm buddies. Be sure to include whatever home made goodies he likes best!!
This care package will be well-received. Send one about once a month if you can!! I've been there.
Chow!!!

You can never go wrong with baked goods. Phone cards are also good. When it gets close to midterms or finals send some caffeinated beverages to assist him in pulling all-nighters.
