No, you're not being intolerant at all. Poor grammar and usage take away from even the best answers. I teach English at the secondary level, and even though the content of a paper may very interesting, if it is phrased poorly and full of mechanical errors, it isn't likely to earn a high mark. As far as going through and correcting everyone else's mistakes, I kind of enjoy the sense of elitism shared by those who can phrase answers that are grammatically correct. It's easy to pass by the "I is be a'thinkin'" answers, whereas someone with a strong command of the language increases their level of authority.

As a teacher I find I often correct student's spoken English. I know language is an evolving structure but I do agree that it is a beautiful thing and should be used correctly. As with any form of art, to abuse it is ugly. I am not sure that Yahoo grammar is any better than that of its many users. I have also found, much to my sadness that people do not care enough to want to correct their own grammar. Where does that leave us?

I wouldn't say intolerant as unaware of individual situations.
I have yet to see a perfect post longer than two sentances. We're exited, we want to get our ideas out, there are going to be typos.
This is one of the only places where people who aren't great communicators might feel comfortable having a voice or learning. I wouldn't want to alienate these people, especially if they're dyslexic, have English as a second language, or are victims of bad education.
Another shout out to people trying to fit their question into the wee space provided and using text messaging characters to do it. You'll notice "Txt spch" seems to be becoming an acceptable way of communicating (be afraid, be VERY afraid). or 1337 (leet) to avoid the censors.
English isn't Latin, its going to change. Find an original writing from the 1800s and compare that to whats acceptable now.
A lot of these people aren't stupid, they just aren't English scholars. Heck, some of these people have a hard enough time making themselves understood let alone have any kind of grasp on grammar. It can drive you nuts, but give them a break.
Save the editor's marks for Wikipedia and term papers.

No. I think you are overreacting.
But it wouldn't be bad if Yahoo answers created mandatory spell checks before posting rather than check spelling as an option. But how would that help the people who can't even tell when a word is correct because they thought they were using the correct word to begin with?
Its nothing you should lose sleep over. :P

Great idea...but I like the poor spelling & grammer...It helps me when I write an answer. An educated adult spells & communicates differently than a 14 year old kid. If all the questions were correct, I wouldn't have as good an idea of who I was communicating with.
- But yes, the errors are annoying

why forever england? as long as people keep to correct spelling and grammar i don't care two shits if it's english or american. on the whole, i'm totally with you, though. some people, largely of a certain age group, actually seem to take pride in coming across as ignorant and uneducated as possible. what on earth is the point about deliberately writing like a fourth grader on speed?

I am disturbed by poor grammar & syntax too, but I guess many visitors to Yahoo Answers are not anglophones so they do not master the language. Other English speakers are just too lazy to make the effort, and have no consideration for the readers.

No I think there is a lot in what you say.
It both worries and saddens me to see how little people care to put effort into their posting.
When so aware that half the world is so poor and unable to enjoy the benefits of education, and we have young people coming on line, using text form of writing and are too lazy to check their spelling. Its almost as though they TRY to be as pathetic as they can?
I cannot help but make critical comments, as I get so mad!

If the improper grammer of yahoo answers drives you to distraction and keeps you from sleeping then maybe you should stop visiting this site. Truly intelligent and witty people probably have their own site. Robin Leach is probably waiting for just the right answer from one of you so he can spotlight you on, "Answers forever England". I would hate to see you miss your shot at wit and fame. Good luck and tah tah.
