Will fresh, green acorns sprout if you plant them?

A lot of types of acorns are still green when the tree drops them, but they are still likely to sprout. This spring I had dozens of oak sprouts springing up everywhere, planted by blue jays who like to store the acorns for future snacks but unfortunately have poor memories for where they left them. So the odds are greatly in your favor if you want to plant them. You can either plant them in the ground or in pots. Either way, just bury them about 1 to 2 inches deep and wait until spring. You should see them sprouting then.

I used to have an oak tree in my yard before an ice storm and a hurricane the next year brought it low. And one year, I got a bumper crop of acorns from it, and every last one of them tried to sprout! I didn't think I was ever going to get them up and out of my lawn!

Believe you me, with the right conditions you'll soon have more oaks making little acorns than you possibly want.

Yes, but it would probably take about 10 yrs to have a 1 foot tall tree. Oaks grow very very slowly.

If the squirrels don't dig them up and eat them. I really think they are supposed to be dried out (brown) before they are ready to grow.
