It was "created" by Harmony Gold by the same method they used to create Robotech.
They adapted and merged two series, in this case Captain Harlock and Queen Millenia. The only "original" scenes for the series were when one storyline or cast member was "interacting" with the other side. Otherwise both were seperate storylines that were rewritten for an American audience into one series.
BTW: For those interested, the three series that combined to form what we know as the Robotech saga are Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeeda: the Genesis Climber.

Uhmmm,... actually as I recall it was in the late 70's it was called Capt. Harlock Space Pirate,... But that was in its original form with translations in subtitles by NHK of Tokyo. It was aired by KIKU in Honolulu.
Why do you ask?
Cheers!!!!
