I think everyone who lives in the States is required to abide by the laws set in place by the government (by which I mean the entity not the politicians).
However, it is the fault of the American people that we allow people who are famous to get away with a lot more than the average person. If you're rich, you are apparently entitled to looser laws that allow you to do illegal activites. The average person on the street is being fed this kind of ridiculous nonsense by the media and they continue to absorb it and turn a blind eye to what goes on.
Example: A while back (maybe the beginning of 2006 or late 2005) one of the Olsen twins was found to be addicted to drugs. Did they prosecute her, as they would with anoyone else? No. They told her to go to rehab. As far as I remember she didn't have to do much else. The average person would be fined a large amount for owning illegal or controlled substances and required to go to rehab for x amount of time. She was given the 'option' of rehab.
This kind of thing is spread by pop media and the majority of people who feel like that's the way it should be or something. They certainly don't speak out against it.

Celebrities who break the law - no matter how "small" the offense, should receive the same punishment as the "average Joe". The thing is, celebrities have the best attorneys that money can buy, and with money comes power and with power SHOULD come responsibility, but it seems that the money just buy irresponsibility. It's not right, but the fault is not with us; it's with the lawyers and judges who let these celebrities get away with murder, robbery, public drunkeness, lewd behavior, solicitation of prostitution . . . you name it, celebrities can get away with it. Personally, I say we take them out back in shoot them in the arm, or leg.

They get out of way too much. I think that they should have harder sentences to get the message through to them, and because they are supposedly our role models. Then again, I hate when I know anything about celebrities because they aren't important and are not newsworthy ever. I was really wanting all the people that said they would leave to leave though. Pissed me off that they didn't.

I think celebrities should be assigned something like twice the community service everyone else is assigned (if the offense is applicable) because they already spend too much time worrying about themselves, and it is pride which makes people commit crimes and thinking they are above the law.

I think it's ridiculous. No one, including the President, should be exempt from the law.

Why do we, the American people, let them get away with it? It's our fault, not theirs, that the rules are different for the rich and famous.

Well, I don't know about persecuting them, but they should be prosecuted like anyone else, regardless of social status.
