Many of the responses suggest hardware that may get you INTO more trouble than it is likely to get you out of (even that double-stack Browning, Ma'am). Better not carry anything that you wouldn't be comfortable getting caught with by the police. And be SURE that you know how far you can go with any defensive weapon, even your hands. The wrong play, and even the right one, can get you arrested, charged and convicted for anything up to murder.
By the way, wearing a keychain around your neck might be a good way to get strangled, if you ever get into a serious fight, or even have it catch on something. There are more than a few industrial accidents where people jump down off something high and lose their ring finger because the ring got caught up there.

I can tell you one thing for sure, I'd feel a hell of a lot safer with a gun. With a taser you need to be too close and have fun spraying pepper spray outside when wind is a factor. lol

I say keychain. I have on around my neck all the time. Although i never use it to defend myself but i always thought about using it.
