Yes. While I think there is some part of "mother's instinct" involved, a lot of it is a common "sense" that develops in all of us at some point. Think about it this way. If you put a small child on a bed, sometimes they roll off of it. When was the last time you rolled off the bed? You don't, right? Why? You sense where the edge of the bed is, and you don't let yourself fall off. This sense tends to extend to the baby when a mother is sleeping with her child. Now, if the mother is impaired in some way (drinking, drugs) or is very obese, they may not be able to sleep safely with the child. However, for the most part, co-sleeping is usually safe.

Yes a mother should be able to sense the baby since they bonded with it since before it entered the world its like the baby is still part of the mother.

Call it a mother's instincts. But when asleep ppl usually cant sense where something is. Sometimes you may have a visual memory of where not to sleep. Maybe that is what helped.

Yep. I used to terrify my partner when he saw me sleeping while breastfeeding- not that I did this all the time- it was just on those nights when I was so tired I couldn't help it.
I remember knowing exactly where my daughter was, but as soon as I was awake enough, I moved her back to her cot.

I slept with my son from the time he was around 4 months old. Now I have a 7 month old daughter and I couldn't imagine sleeping with her. I can't believe I did it with my son. I'm too conserned about squishing her.
