there is no difference. Laptop is just a fancier name for a notebook. But I think notebooks are a bit more portable.

Notebook and laptop are really the same thing. However, computer manufacturers have stopped using the word "laptop". You're not supposed to place your lightweight folding computer on your lap, but on a hard surface where air can circulate freely under and around it. Since notebook computers have become more powerful and smaller, they run hotter, so they need un-obstructed ventilation, and could possibly give you an uncomfortable mild burn if you fall asleep with one on your lap.

A desktop computer usually has a larger case and nearly always has a separate keyboard and monitor. (the Apple eMac and iMac are exceptions) The components in notebooks and desktops are the same in principle but the ones used in notebooks are specially designed for small size, light weight and low (battery) power usage. These constraints raise the price of notebook components, so you'll find that for comparable performance, a desktop is usually cheaper (and for comparable price, a desktop is more powerful)

Now that the intel core duo chips are out, prices are falling rapidly on desktops and notebooks using AMD and earlier Intel chips. Don't forget to comparison shop!

They used to be called laptops because the idea was that you could put them on your lap. Now that the processors are getting bigger, they tend to run a lot hotter. So hot, in fact, that you can get severe burns if you use them on your lap. So they're going away from the laptop term and going more towards the notebook term.
