To put it in a nutshell, the Internet empowers people with unrestricted access to information wherever you are!

Well it opens an entirely new database of information. Much of it is very helpful and good; things we need to know. Also, it has been a gateway to easier communication. You can "chat" with someone from halfway around the Earth through the internet. It is an overall great invention.
With every great invention, however, there are negative effects. People abuse the internet and wreck havoc on others' property. People use it to find more and more information on other people, and they use that information to cause another human being harm.
You cannot look at the good without looking at the bad, and vice versa.

This isn't a fireworks and revelation kind of answer, but in the workplace it has made a huge difference. I can find parts and services for projects that previously I would never have had access to.
As an example, we had a machine connected to compressed air fail because moisture got in the air. I contacted my local air parts supply house, and they couldn't point me in any direction. I finally found an obscure custom engineered unit from a small company in CO. Without the internet, I would still be guessing if the equipment would fail again.
