There are two causes for an electric water heater to not function, usually, the thermostat, and the heating elements. The thermostat tells the heating elements when to come on... if its not sensing properly, then your heating element, while it may be in fine working order itself, will not function.

You need a mulitmeter to check these parts on a water tank, but they are EASY to replace. You can find replacement thermostats and elements at any hardware, or building supply store. The thermostat is usually mounted on the tank with screws, and the heating elements actually screw into the tank. You will want to drain the tank to below the elements, and shut off the water, obviously, or youre going to have a big puddle, hehehe. The parts arent that expensive...if you're not familiar with using a mulitmeter, you could just replace both, the thermostat and elements.

make sure the electricity is on to the hot water tank, if so and still no hot water likely the element is burnt out.

The thermostat of heating element is out. Those are easy to check if you have skills around electricity. If not, you might find getting it fixed or replaced by a professional is less expensive than a funeral.

Heating element is shot. Typically, an element is in a well in the tank and not difficult to change. Follow elecrical precautions if you attempt it yourself.
