Well, this is more about food and wine, I guess, than it is about dating? If this is a dating question, gee, I can't help you.

Red is for meats. But mostly because red would overpower the delicate favor of fish and poultry. I can't drink most reds. They do me in. So a rose, now usually called a blush wine, works nicely.
Blush wine will go well with poultry, too, and with some, but not all fish.
White is also a good choice. And just because you order meat, doesn't mean you can't have white wime. And the white will usually go well with the appetizers.

Have a great date, and bon appettit.

You do not ask for wine at a restaurant. You ask to see a wine list. But only after you have chosen your main course. Matching wines with foods is very simple.

Red meat = Red Wine
White meat = White Wine

If you are new to wine red wines tends to be too much for you. They are an acquired taste. Like the first time you try beer. You have to get use to it. Pino Nior a good red wine for beginners.

Just about everyone can drink white wines as beginners. I don't drink white wine so I don't know which one is good as a beginner.

Zinfandel and Blushes tend to be sweet and also not my thing.

A good bet is to match the country with the wine. Like when having Italian food order Italian wine.

You need to know what kind of wine you like.
If you seldom have wine, then try a white zinfindel. It is light and just about anyone will like it right off.
Eventually, you will get tired of it and move on to the dryer wines. Like Chardonnay for example.
The reds probably take the longest to acquire a taste for. Try an Australian Shiraz, like Rosemont, dry and full of subtle fruit flavors.
Main thing, always drink what you like by experimenting and don't listen to the wine snobs. Check out wine bars in your area and ask to do a sampling.

Ordinarily you'd order a red wine with meat or game and a white wine to go with fish.

The best course is just to order what you like.

A sommelier or waiter can also help you make a good selection. In fact, even though I am reasonably knowledgeable about wine, if there were a sommelier at the restaurant, I would seek their opinion as it's their job to know wine really well and to know which wines will complement the meal being ordered.

I'll tell the waiter what I want to eat and then ask him to recommend me a glass of wine to go with it. Now this I would only do if it is a good restaurant, because the waiters usually are told what wines to pair with certain foods. Otherwise the general rule is red with meat, or heavy seasoned plates, whites with chicken, fish or pastas and champagne or proseco for the dessert.

it depends on what kind of wine you like.

I have found there are not many that I like. I have only one that I like to drink with most any meal and it is called Post brand Niagara.

But normally I just get a Michelob Ultra Amber, It goes good with about any heavy meal.

Then you better know the person you are on the date. I think you might want to ask her/him what they like. There is a 90% chance you will buy a bottle of wine for abut 50 bucks or a glass for 12 bucks and she will not like it. On most dates I have been on the woman ordered a beer or a coke or Tea.

So don't make yourself look stupid, Just ask. If you have to impress someone then they are not worth your time.

If you don't have much knowledge about wine I would just ask the sommelier (if the restaurant has one) or the waiter for a recommendation. Although if your eatery of choice is the Olive garden or Red Lobster this might not be such a good idea.

Try to remember the name when you drink a wine you like for future reference.

Just ask for a glass of the house red wine if you're having meat or house white if you're having fish or seafood. The waiter will bring you the special wine the restaurant is serving.

it depends on what you're ordering, if you like steak choose a dark wine like merlot. i'm not real up to date on what wines go with what food but white zinfandel is always a nice choice. or ask for the house wine the restaurant is pushing.
