Its got to have iron in it to start with, that rules out aluminium and copper.
For the steel rod just rub an existing magnet along it, use one pole of the magnet and rub from one end to the other of the rod

First only iron or steel. I don't think you will have much luck with aluminium or copper.
You can lay the rod in a north south direction and leave it and it will magnetise naturally. If you want it stronger you can stroke it with a powerful magnet ( Speakers have magnets at the back of them which can be used.) It is also possible to make an electro magnet with some wire and a good battery using the rod as a central core. Good luck

As stated if you lay it North to South it will slowly magnetise. It does this because the irons in the metal slowly position themselves in the same direction using the natural magnetism of the earth. You can create a stronger magnet by doing the same thing but with either a stronger natural magnets or artificial (electro) magnets to help align the irons.
I also believe you can help it by causing the irons to move more freely by hitting it or heating it up.

You need to coil an insulated copper wire around the rod and then run a electric current, it will then be magnetised

You can rub a powerful magnet over the rod which will make it magnetic.
You could coil thin wire around it and and pass an electric current through the wire, this will also make it magnetic.
Aluminium and copper can not be made magnetic as the metal rod has to be made from a ferrous material, ie iron.

Hope this helps

i'll assume you don't already have a magnet, or you wouldn't ask this question. to magnetize a metal rod, you clamp it down in a vice, point the rod north and south, and smack the end of it with a hammer 6 or 7 times

run electric into the metal rod and it's magnetised

1. Rub an iron rod with a magnet, always in the same direction.
2. Place an iron rod in a coil with a direct current in it.
Iron, nickle and steel can be magnetized; not aluminum and copper.

take a steel rod and take insulated copper cord/wire and wrap it around the steel rod nice and neatly covering most of the rod and the two ends of the cord u attach to a battery. this should create a electro magnet for you.

Coil whire around the rod and run acurrent through it. By doing this, you are creating an electro magnet.
