pants can still be very flexible for doing cheerleading routines.
most athelets where pants.
why do cheerleaders need to wear short skirts? is it just because they are eye candy/sex objects?
why would high schools encourage their underage students to dress up like sex objects?

good question...seems like the morals have eroded over the years, but to suggest they change will anger them. I'm thinking the attidudes would have to change before the clothes do.

There used to be a saying in the retail industry that said when the economy is bad the skirts are long, when the economy is good the skirts are short.

If you look at pictures from olden times when times were tough women wore long skirts with lots of crenolines and pantaloons under them, and swimsuits covered a woman down to the knees.

Why do track runners wear tiny shorts? Seriously, track shorts are incredibly tight and only a little bit bigger than underwear.

But, for cheerleaders, it is about tradition. It's not necessary for them to wear pants. And the style now is short skirts, among other things. So that's what they wear. My cousin is a cheerleader, and she doesn't complain. And though cheerleaders are generally seen as eye candy, it is a valid sport. Just as much as dance is (even though I hate to say that, I'm a ballet person). It takes a lot of work to be good at it. Most of the really great cheerleading is done in competitions, not on the field where they are seen by others.

So yeah, it's partially because of their status as eye candy, but it's also about current styles and because there is no need for them to dress differently. But they do have little shorts under their skirts, so it's not like you can really see anything.

Short skirts and band uniforms? That doesn't seem right. In my highschool band the girls wore the same black pants as the guys and we still looked hot, Hah hah. If you really feel strongly about this you could protest, but first see if other girls feel the same way. Then it is more likely that something will be done about it. Or else you could get one that is two sizes too big and then take in the waist. Anyways, if you love band, you shouldn't let a small detail like the uniform hold you back and stop you from joining. :)

Years and styles have dominated this issue.
The fasion-issue relies upon how VERSATILE the outfit is....... Can the material allow the (in this case) Cheerleader to perform all the actions without causing soreness or injury?
Just research the TENNIS PLAYERS of 40+ years ago. - Billie Jean King entered the tennis circuit wearing a long dress fasion on the court to nowadays the fasions are barely enough to cover the female players.

I can't even imagine trying to perform in pants.

First of all, try to to a pike or herkie wearing a pair of pants. Better yet, can you do the splits in pants without ripping out the crotch? Cheerleaders perform....that's what we do. Wearing pants would not be conducive or practical.

Because girls of that age are in their reproductive prime, and in order for them to attract mates with resources (money, skills, social status, perhaps good genes as well), they must send signals that demonstrate their genetic and reproductive superiority. This is why most girls, starting at around 14, start wearing makeup and dressing- well, to attract. Until we evolve to become more than animals, which we may never, you will always see young girls dress to attract, and young males ACT to attract. Watch some nature programs, then go to a downtown night club, and you'll see essentially the same behaviors!!! It's kind of depressing considering we have big brains but I suppose that without it, our race wouldn't exist!

they aren't trying to encourage it. it's just ever since there has been cheerleaders they have worn skirts. i am a cheerleader and i think it is kind of rediculous that schools even in this day and age feel like they can't break tradition. maybe they just wanna distract the other team:-)

That is a fair question actually. Maybe the cheerleaders like it that way as they know all males eyes will be on them. I don't hear them complaining
