General Manager John Scherhulotz is a man who likes to save money, despite the high payroll. That's why he let go of guys like Maddux, Glavine, Sheffield, and Furcal go somewhere else "scott-free" because they beleive that their farm system would let them keep winning, the method that Scherhulotz used since he came to the Braves. So far, it hasn't been the same dominant Braves that rule the N.L. East years ago. Young kids like Francoeur, LaRoche and McCann are helping guys like Chipper and Andruw Jones on offense but the departured of pitching guru Leo Mazzone has really hurt this team this year. Their ace, Tim Hudson, is struggling to find his command and the bullpen and the back end of the rotation has been ugly at best since Smoltz was thrusted back into the starting rotation two years ago after he, along with Eric Gagne, dominated the closing circuit in baseball. This could be the winning team in the near future but this is a wild-card team at best because they haven't fully identified themselves as a dominant team yet.

Why does your question suck this year? The Braves can have an off year every once in a while. Hell, Detroit's having the first good season since the late 80's and nobody was saying "Why do the Tigers suck this year?" for all those years. So LAY OFF my Braves!

They ran out of luck and umpires calling strike everything they pitched. Any way no one remembers who won the NL West in the early 90's or the NL east in the last part of the 90's and the first five years of the 2000's.

Come play off time when they meet the good teams that's when they fail. How about 14 Division Pennants and only one WS to show for against a perennial loser, the Cleveland Indians. Florida Marlins no pennants yet but 2 World Series and never lost a series in post season.

Before 1991 they were always last in the standings and in 1988 they competed toe to toe with the orioles for the worst start ever. So you had your chance and only got one championship. Maybe 100 years from now We'll be talking of the curse of the Bravino or the Billy the Goat, trying to explain their futility.

I don't like to use the word suck but they are definetly having problems mostly because of starting pitching and middle relief. Two starters missed the entire season and the other starters including Hudson have had bad years other than Smoltz and too many times the bullpen cannot throw strikes and gets hammered. I also don't believe the team chemistry has been as good this year. Hopefully during the off season this will get worked out and we will contend for the division titile again and maybe even more.

This is not the same Braves as 5 years ago. This is a team going through a rebuilding process, bringing in youth, and it will take a few years to pay dividends. They've lost a lot of their veteran players from a few years ago, and those who remain are aging. The young players for the most part have not yet reached their peak.

Its a shame.. The braves had a hell of a run with the pennant being basically theirs for 15 years. They have a lot of young guys that will develop but with time. The braves have Andruw Jones.. and .. Andruw Jones. You guys need more of a veteran base to build the team around and to have as a Role follower for the younger guys that are maturing in the organization

They need to go and get some pitching either if it means trading for a great reliever or signing someone in the offseason!

They let go their pitching coach, one of the best on the game. Plus they let go Furcal one of the best lead off hitter on both leagues. And Chipper is getting rusty.
