Female circumcision is mainly carried out in western and southern Asia, the Middle East and large areas of Africa.

It is also known to take place among immigrant communities in the USA, Canada, France, Australia and Britain, where it is illegal.

In total it is estimated that 2m women a year are subjected to genital mutilation.

The aim of the process is to ensure the woman is faithful to her future husband.

Some communities consider girls ineligible for marriage if they have not been circumcised.

'Unsanitary'

Girls as young as three undergo the process, but the age at which the operation is performed varies according to country and culture.

Health workers say that the operation is often carried out in unsanitary conditions.

Razor blades, scissors, kitchen knives and even pieces of glass are used, often on more than one girl, which increases the risk of infection.

Anaesthesia is rarely used.

Some girls die as a result of haemorrhaging, septicaemia and shock.

Female circumcision and male circumcision are not equivalent. Male circumcision is a beneficial health practice that make men more hygienic and less at risk for cancer and infection, in addition to more aesthetically pleasing. For a male to receive the equivalent of a female circumcision, the entire glans would have to be removed.

Yep, very common amongst some African tribes. Seems somewhat barbaric to me though and often has unpleasant consequences due to the circumcision being performed badly.

You must be really bored... you are asking a lot of questions, maybe your mom and dad could help you with some of the answers. Do you know that you are gonna use up all of your points before you go back to school on Tuesday? Maybe you should save some points so you can ask questions about your homework next week.

I'm sure plenty of people know about female genital mutilation, it is one of the reasons Africa ought to be below sea level. And it isn't equivalent to male circumcision, it is equivalent to having the whole glans removed from the penis.

I've known for years. It's female genital mutilation is what it is. Many girls are held down and "done" with barber scissors or a knife that may be rusty and has almost without exception Not been sterilized, and many girls die from loss of blood or infection.
