Yes, yes, I know about Ebay. I'm looking for particular dealers that you may have bought things from and trust.

I ordinarily rely on

http://abebooks.com

In this case they have 54 copies of John Steinbeck books, first editions with dust jackets, that range from $5,000 to $30,000; these include Grapes of Wrath, Red Pony, Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men, Winter of Our Discontent, and others.

On the other hand, they list 4482 as first edition hardbacks. I would be suspicious of most of these. Some are not really first editions but reprints; some are first editions, but not first printing; some do not have djs or are not in very good condition. Some of them are not even old.

However, there are more than 1000 copies priced between $25 and $50, and some of these appear to be genuine first edition hardbacks, maybe even with djs and in good condition. So you might find just what you are looking for.

Before purchasing through abebooks, I always ask the dealer to verify that the book is a first edition, first printing, and if possible I ask for a photograph. Almost all dealers will let you return a copy if you are not satisfied, but some will expect you to pay the shipping costs both ways. You can determine that also before you order. If you're lucky, there will be abebooks dealers near to where you live that have what you are looking for.

Other online groups of dealers are

and

http://www.bibliophile.net

Good luck! I hope you find what you're looking for.

Most used and rare book dealers sell online through www.bookfinder.com. Sorry, I don't personally know any dealers specializing in first editions.

Dont know where you live, but in Reno Nevada there is a book store called "Dharma Books" that carries old and limited edition books...maybe if you called them they could refer you to a seller.

E-bay ? You'd have to be in control of a whole lot of money ...Steinbeck is probably .hidden in someone's inheritance or in a private collection somewhere ....GOOD LUCK in your quest ..
