here's my problem-O
I took the GED test and.. I passed
i got the letter in the mail and it says congratulations! you passed the GED test blah blah blah... but california law authorizes the issuance of your certificate on or after your 18th birthday. Your certificate will be mailed to you approximately one week following your 18th birthday.

well I am 17 and my 18th birthday isn't for like 5 months. My question is.. can I go to college or get a job right now or do i have to wait for the actual certificate?

I agree with Richard. Make several copies and keep the original. Don't let it out of your hands. The copies should suffice for any job interviews. As far as college goes, you are probably starting out taking some courses at a local college where you can walk in with your copy. In my experience, if you have the money for the class, they'll take you unless you are applying at a 4 year place where you have to be accepted first. Even then, I have walked in and signed up for a single class and got in because I had the money for the course. go for it. don't let anything stand in your way or intimidate you. The worst they can do is say no, come back, but I doubt that will happen.

I would check with your college guidance counselor for sure. I am surprised that they allowed you to take the test. To my knowledge, I thought your graduating class had to be graduated before you were eligible to get your GED. I know that high school kids have taken classes at a junior college so I don't see why they wouldn't let you. That's my advice.

You passed. If you need to provide proof to an employer or admissions department, give them a copy of your letter.
