They are caused by a fungus that is naturally on our skin, use of antibiotics kills off the "good bacteria" that helps keep it under control to prevent the itching, odor and discharge. Also excessive moister and heat can create the right environment for the fungus to get out of control and start an infection. It also can be transferred between people.

yeast is a fungal organism that is often present in and on the body and may become "opportunistic" and cause infection if/when the body's environment is just right. This organism may be passed from person to person, but is not primarily an std.
