Celebrity news is used to distract you from what political leaders are doing to and with your country and money. Whenever the news is flooded with Brad Pitts baby's hernia or something you should jump over to C Span and see what civil right was just lost or what country built an atom bomb. For the same reason political leaders in the USA like to do bad things on Friday because people are out having fun instead of watching them. It's like the big grownup version of the break dancer in the park whose friend is taking your wallet while you watch the show. Good question. oh yes remember to roll your eyes and say politics are boring and that you hate scientists and lawyers. Pop culture makes you love your robbers and oppressors, and 'cool' to mock the only people who could bring them down. The only thing democracy cannot survive is ignorance.

Apparently the 80 zillion people who buy those stupid celebrity magazines with made up stories and watch tv shows like Entertainment Tonight and the Oscars.
Most people have always been fascinated with royalty and the rich and famous. Too bad they don't pay as much attention to the real problems in the world as they do to what Paris Hilton is wearing or what Mel Gibson says when he's drunk.

People have always been fascinated by celebrities because they are public figures, and everyone knows who they are. In general, they lead far more interesting lives than most of the rest of us.
Sure, it's mostly all lighthearted "fluff", but so what? That's why it's called "entertainment" - it's not MEANT to be all somber & serious! If you are in a somber and serious mode, watch CNN!!!
I agree that most celebs these days aren't even worthy of all the attention and adulation they receive, but you can blame the KIDS for THAT!!! The media caters to the youngsters out there.
But if you are not interested in celebrities AT ALL, I have to wonder what brings you to THIS category of Yahoo! Answers in the first place???!

Celebrities are interesting and its fun to make fun of the Paris Hilton's and Lindsay Lohan's of the world. They're so rich and shallow you have to laugh at their antics.
