There's these guys in my class. They're nice and all..sometimes they'll say they're gonna beat me up or lightly punch my arm or something. Are they flirting or what?

when i was in jr high- this boy and i would push each other whenever we saw the other walking down the halls. and i was crushing pretty hard for him and later on we dated for awhile. so yeah usually when guys punch a girl lightly it means he has an interest in her.

I think it depends on whether they're joking or not. If they're laughing or smiling into your eyes as they do it, it's definitely flirtation. If they're grinning, but only at each other, as though they're sharing a joke, it's not. And if they aren't smiling or laughing at all, it's not flirtation.

More importantly, using joke violence to flirt is kind of strange - is it really that funny to joke about hitting you, or beating you up? You might try joking back, by saying something like, "Hey, it's mean to beat people up...why would you want to do that to me?" or simply "Why would you want to do that?" and see how they react. Their response will probably help clear the situation up, even though they'll probably answer in a joke as well.

Most guys are raised to interact in an aggressive way, which is often how they start flirting. And most girls are raised to interact in an affectionate way, which is often how *they* start flirting. As they grow, they'll learn different ways - girls learn to joke around and be more aggressive, and guys learn to say sweet things and be more gentle. But in the meanwhile...they're probably just treated you the only way they really know how, without sacrificing any "coolness".

Best of luck...and happy flirting!
