For photo editing I recomend: CPU : Intel Pentium 3.2Ghz (just a basic pentium. AMD is also good but you might consider upgrading the heat sink as they do run hot and you might experience the blue screen of death syndrome), Ram 1 GB, Hdd SATA II 120 GB or more (movie files take up alot of room), Video card : Do not get "onboard crap" as you try to move photos around they will flicker allover the place, At least get nvidia 6800 gt or Ati X800 (I found Ati drivers to be more compatible). Make sure you also get a DVD Burner so you can put your "master pieces" on DVD. I know this might cost a little more to have than the standard of the market now, but you will NOT be sorry in two years time.

I do not recommend any of the other answers.
Online security has apsolutely nothing to do with what model of computer, only what software you are running.
A firewall will keep spyware from sending personal information outside your computer, but I really recommend downloading and using MOZILLA FIREFOX, which is an alternative to internet explorer, and is not suseptable to viruses.
If you want a good machine for photo editing, the main component you are looking for is the graphics card.
I went with an acer 5670wlmi from NEWEGG.COM, and I have never come accross a better deal in any way shape or form.
It has apsolutely everything you need, and for an affordable $1100, compared to about $2000 for what the others recommended.
Good luck

'Git' an Apple Macintosh G5 or iMac, with Mozilla Firefox as your browser for maximum security. (Apple machines are also a lot more virus-proof than PCs.)
Switching from Windows just needs an adjustment period, but once you do, you'll never go back. Your kids will eventually take over your machine - just tie them up for a while, that usually works.
The apps you need for photos & movies are standard with Mac OSX 10.4 'Tiger', or you can add them; there's a reason why Microsoft print advertising is designed on Mac desktop systems, and why Microsoft TV commercials are (most likely) edited on high-end Apple systems.

id suggest a pc with at least 512 MB of DDR2 RAM (1GB if u cn afford it) and a 64 bit CPU preferably from AMD and a 100GB SATA hard drive. also try to get a pc with an actual graphics card (no mobo graphics chip) mayb an Nvidia Geforce 6800, i know its a bit old but you dont seem to be the type of person who's really into games but it should be more than adequate for watching movies (make sure you dont a graphics card from ATI, a couple of months ago a problem was discovered in their graphics cards that makes movies slightly deformed when you watch them)last thing, make sure you dont buy HP Compaq (theyr actaully one company by the way) ive tried several of their pcs, theyr just a pain in the @$$

My small company has 20 or so Dell systems. They are built very simply (nearly all generic devices like disk drives work with them), easy to work on, and have been a good value.
We find that after about 3 years the disk tend to die. So we replace them after 30 months or so. Don't think this is a Dell issue, but disk in general. They run all the time, and are physical devices.

My dell seems to be safe and i do all they things even with limewire also please note,
its not the PC thats safe its the anti spyware and virus that you use,
I have McAfee Internet pageage and it covers the whole lot and i have never had a virus (although 1 nearly got in but McAfee stopped it)
so Pc dont matter but Dell is good, also so is Compaq,
Please BUY your self some good internet protection package as it is the thing that keeps you safe.
DOWN LOAD MOZZIL FIREFOX google it (its a FREE and SAFE browser but also keep IE)
