I have a Presario 5000, yes its kinda old >.< but I found it has 512 RAM I beleive it has SDRAM, if that means anything..

I am sorta computer savy but not when it comes to this type of stuff, well I recently got DSL and my computers slow.. I would like to upgrade more ram, I heard sometimes you have to have the same brand of ram for it to work. Can anyone please explain ram to me and what brand and type I would be looking for. Im at a loss here..
I have the pentium 4 if that makes any difference :)

Adding more than 512MB of RAM to a computer that's that old will help nothing, unless you're trying to use it for a gaming rig. Besides, buying 1GB of RAM for it will cost you almost as much as buying a completely new system, that's 4-5 times as fast.

I don't think that having only 512MB of RAM is slowing you down, though. Since that computer is 6 years old, I would also recommend reformatting your hard drive. Well, reformatting of the partition that has Windows on it. Once Windows has been installed again, go to Start, then click on Run, then type in "msconfig", without the quotation marks. Then, click the Startup tab (at the top), and disable all of that crap that all pre-built computers have running in the background.

It will take a few hours, but I can guarantee you that your computer will be much more responsive.

512 ram is pretty darn good.
I would check for viruses and spy ware if it seems slow.
How ever reinstall of windows sounds to drastic for what ur discibing. As for the ram you can always take out ur stick and take it into a local shop and tell them you want to upgrade. Also be prepared with make and model of ur pc and the specifics on it.
Good luck.

512 ram and a p4 is a good pc, if ur pc seems slow tjhen chances are you have you have a lot of shite on there that you no longer need or you have ad-aware or even a virus, dont panic, one good way to make ur pc faster is to reinstall the operating system, back up your files first. if your not confedent to do that then you can get ad-aware se from www.download.com, run that and it might work, i'd go for a reinstall myself cos i have a p4 with 512ram and my pc is super fast.

I'm not sure what the Model of the Presario 5000 you have is.
Crucial, Corsair and other Memory Manufactuers have Memory Advisor Tools to tell what you can use. Here is a link to Crucial's Advisor Tool:
http://www.crucial.com/
They explain memory on their website too.

RAM depends upon what type of motherboard you have
if u have DDR ram supportable mother board then u can put DDR RAM .

But i think u r mother board must be only SD RAM supportable...

so check for motherboard support and then decide
..

Well the best ram is DDR RAM

Add another stick of 512 to get 1gb. You can download a free utility cpu-z http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-136.zip
just open it and it will tell you everything about you cpu, ram, motherboard, timings.
