It might seem simplistic, but my answer is simply that they are pointing out that evil can and does come from the heart of man rather than some outside entity that forces someone to act ('the devil made me do it').
Humans have many good qualities but there also exists the darker side of the human condition. Be careful of it. Do not let shallowness or darkness overtake you or allow it to dictate your actions.

In my mind they were trying to list all the major stuff that had happened in the century, and put the final blame on the devil, still playing rock, and a darn good song, one of my favorites
