leavemebe_1 is right. there is absoloutly NO trading from fire/leaf to ruby/sapphire/emerald until you have completed a major quest in fire/leaf.

the reason why is because fire/leaf takes place like 3-5 years BEFORE ruby/sapphire/emerald. because of this time difference, which had to be used because gold/silver/crystal was 3 years after red/blue/yellow already, in fire/leaf, you need to build the time machine, which needs a ruby and a sapphire to work.

after you beat fire/leaf's elite 4 and champ, you get a new ticket to go to the number islands. as you complete those island's quests, you will be able to move through time and trade with ruby/sapphire/emerald

Actually, I'm in the same boat... I completed the quest and did the ruby and saphire thing, beat the Elite Four on Fire Red, then I beat the Elite Four on Sapphire and I'm still not able to trade. I go upstairs and save the game and then it goes to "press b to cancel" and then doesn't do anything... I've even checked my connections over and over and it isn't doing anything.

with a view to commerce pokemon from saphhire to FireRed, you may desire to work out all a hundred and fifty pokemon in firered, and characteristic this extraordinary gem you get in some island after beating the elite 4. that may no longer be one hundred% precise, yet to place it in basic terms, you gotta have a minimum of overwhelmed the elite 4 in firered. or you gotta fake like firered is purple/blue/yellow, the place in basic terms kanto existed.

*Minor spoilers*

After you get the National Pokedex and bring Celio the Sapphire and Ruby at the Sevii Islands, you should be able to trade between them. Something tells me you didn't do that.
