I don`t think there is a superstition. In a certain brain operation which is done with a local anesthetic when a certain part of the brain is touched the patient can smell burning toast. Perhaps this is where this has come from

ditto the "brain tumor" answer.
In "The Exorcist", the child being possessed smelled strange things, and she was checked out for brain lesions.
In Stephen King's book "Roadwork" he described a boy with a brain tumor smelling pencil shavings.

I think there's something from a movie or tv show that goes, if you smell burning feathers, you have a brain tumor....

Never heard of it. But I used to believe that you must hold your breath when passing a cemetary so you don't inhale the spirits of dead people and so become possessed.
