rats make an excellent choice as a pet, very intelligent and clean. They love human interaction and like to play, they are happy to be handled by children as well-they would need more looking after than hamsters as they are awake more in the day and need to be kept busy.

They make excellent pets, I have had 3 now. They are very clean, eat anything, don't bite and will happily ride around on your shoulder. I used to take one of mine to the pub with me and she would sit on my shoulder and eat crisps. She cured a lot of people's phobia of rats this way. I find their cages can be left a little longer between clean outs if you use Catsan Cat Litter instead of woodshavings, as it absorbs any odours. I can't understand why people buy their children any other pet having now experienced having pet rats.

Rats are great pets. They are cleaner, smarter and friendlier than all those other fuzzy things like hamsters, bunnies, ferrets and mice.

You can even train them to ride around on your shoulder and sit with you while you do things like computer work and watching TV.

Most people can't get past the hairless tail, but that is just part of the package.

At first I was skeptical, however, when my 10 year old son won his class' rat it has been pleasantly surprising. He loves it! He carries it around on his shoulder. I'm amazed how clean it is and the family has really warmed up to it. The class named it Marshmallow, but he calls it Marshy. He knows it will not live long (a couple of years) but all children need to have a pet sometime in their live.

I had one as a pet, and it surprised me by showing quite its own definite personality. I was very happy to meet such a nice animal. But it ended sadly, because the rat had a misaligned incisor tooth, which grew out like a tusk and made eating almost completely impossible. I didn't have access to a veterinarian then, and it died, but never did anything hostile or mean in its life. Its (I think - her) name was "Bishop".

Rats are drop dead gorgeous. Only thing is the honeybuns cant help but pee. After a day or so their cage will smell like digestive biscuits, which is endearing. After that, it gets a bit worse, so plenty sawdust for them, and clean out regular. Let them out at night, and you stand to get woken up by tiny sniffing noises in your ear! Giggle on sweetheart!!! They're lovely.

I would not have one myself, couldn't get past the stigma I afraid but I do know people who have them as pets and they think they are great. I just can't figure out why someone would want a pet that has to live in a cage all the time. What fun is that??
