"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. I knew it was a bestseller, but for some reason it didn't sound like it would appeal to me.
Also, the Haruki Murakami books I have read have all turned out to be much better than I expected, especially "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" and "Sputnick Sweetheart". I though the Bird Chronicle would be good but not as incredible as it turned out to be.

Battlefield Earth turned out to be one of the best books I have ever read, but I thought it would be too long at first. The last 600 pages were actually the best :)

Orwell's 1984. I knew this book as teh favourite of like 3-4 male friends, and thought it would somehow be a masculine book or something, but after reading it i think its one of the best books ive read.

Also couple lithuanian books - Pozera's 'Fish dont recognize their children" and Putinas' "In teh shadow of the altars" - i used to underestimate the lithuanian writers, but these two books are worth to be world wide known.

The Odyssey.

Classics always weigh heavily on a young reader...like eating your brussel sprouts. I actually didn't read it when it was assigned to me in high school. Seemed too unpleasant. But after college, when my conscience finally caught up with me, I read it. And then I read it again. And now I read it once a year.

There's nothing more gripping than a good tale of justice served.

Memoirs of a Geisha. I was turned off by all the movie hype but once I picked up the book I couldn't believe how well written it was!

Da Vinci Code, because generally I don't like contemporary fiction. But it was a good mystery, and the codes were cool. (I did figure out the ending early, though!)
