make sure u hav a fast hard drive and cpu. if the cpu cant access the data wich is in RAM fast enough then ur pc will still run slowly even tho u might hav as much as 1 GB of RAM, so u might want to upgrade to a faster cpu. another problem might be your hard drive, if youve installed a lot of programs and things on ur pc then the hdd will become fragmented and slow down your pc even more so run the defragment utility that comes with windows (accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter) also u shouldnt run too many programs at once, that will slow any pc down.

I agree with everyone else who suspect that your computer problem might be caused by a virus, spyware or any other malicious file. But, there are other reasons which can cause your computer to go very slow. What you need is a plan. I recommend the following steps:

1. Remove any obsolete files with Disk Cleanup. Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

2. Remove any non-crucial startup programs. Start menu > Rund > type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) > [Enter] > select "Startup" tab > uncheck any programs you don't need to load during startup (e.g.QuickTime player, Microsoft Office, WinZip...).

3. Now, scan your computer with your antivirus software. You should also can for any spyware or adware as well. Quarantine any suspicious files. Do not delete them yet.

4. Next, defrag your hard drive. Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Deframenter.

5. Afterwards reboot and see if your computer is working faster than before.

6. These are very basic steps to restore your computer's speed and performance. You can find more advance tweaks at:

Are you running a lot of programs? 512 MB is not a lot of ram, although it should be a decent amount. It is also possible you have a virus/spyware infection. Make sure you have anti-virus software http://free.grisoft.com and all of your latest windows updates as well.
