yup it's a tradition in both worlds, I live in the east (philippines) the main coarse usually consists of protein, starch, and carbs so sugar and fruit is needed after to balance the body, while the common desert here for example are : fried banana in sugar crust, sweet corn jelly, and sticky sweet rice dipped in sugar. so both the people from the east and the west have similar nutritional needs. :)

Not sure about the eastern world, but somehow something sweet after a delicious meal really hits the spot. Maybe the thinking goes something like, "Okay, I just ate a very healthy meal with fruit and vegetables... I can spoil myself a little bit afterwards with some pie, cake, cookies, or ice cream."

Maybe it was a way of getting kids to eat their dinner (the healthier food).
I don't feel the need for dessert too much anymore especially if something in my meal is really sweet. Sometimes whatever I drink with my meal, I consider dessert.

In many Asian countries desert (sweets, nuts, fruits and candy) are served before the meal. In many cultures, before dinner the guests and hosts sit together sipping tea and munching on 'desert'. After and hour or so the feast starts, and many times it is finished off with a desert too, like a main birthday cake. :)

I think it is more a Western thing. It signals the end of the meal, this might help with diets because it is a signal to stop eating.

When I was in China, they served something resembling a doughnut, but after that they served Watermelon.
So, I think that it is not common to have the sweetest thing at the end.
