That one is a very tough call for me as I grew up almost literally on the border. I'm from the area of western Virginia that didn't secede from the state, which in itself was a nebulous region of pro-Union and pro-Confederate supporters. Thus I would probably have to decide by ideology alone.
It would be easy to say that I would go with the Union as I am indeed against slavery. That was a morally repugnant system that should have been allowed to die out, but instead we kept breeding them. (That is, children of slave were slaves themselves when they should have been free from birth.)
However, despite how many people would want to boil the conflict down to one single issue, the reasons for the Civil War were more than just this one issue of slavery. A significant factor in the conflict was the debate over just what powers that the states had versus what powers the federal government had, which was still in debate before the 14th Amendment (and to a certain degree still today). I suppose that I would have been in the same predicament as Robert E. Lee in this regard, as which did I have the greater loyalty to, Virginia or the United States? That I can't really decide.
So I'll take the weasel way out. Since I now live in Indiana, I'd go with the North. :-)

I think it would have depended on where I lived.
Naturally the abolishment of slavery was a just and worthy cause. However the Union did have some ulterior motives in regard to tax and revenue that are not widely publicized. Slavery and the Confederacy was not right either..... sometimes you don't get to make an informed choice in the height of conflict. With the lack of instant media during that time period, I could see that it would be easiest to fight for the region in which you lived.
Staying out of the war might make you a coward or a traitor in the eyes of your friends, relatives and neighbors..... Wars bring out the worst in human nature, so to protect my family I would fight for an unjust cause, as a single man, I would choose what I believe.

That is an interesting question. Everyone today can say they would be in the Union, because where i am living i would be in it to, but for the main reason that the South left the country(North was controlling the economy) i would have to say i would probably have been in the confederate

Because of the slavery issue and the fact that we view it as so wrong most of us would probably say the Union, but the truth is back than you would probably fight for the states you were from.

Lets be realistic- it would depend on where you lived. So much more was involved than just fighting to end slavery. I had ancestors on both sides. When it came down to it, the Union had to prevail.

I would've been in the 3rd Virginia Regiment, of Kemper's Brigade, of Pickett's Division, of Longstreet's 1st Corps.... staring belly-up on the gentle slopes of Cemetery Ridge....within reach of the copse of trees and stone fence....Rats!!!. I didn't make it.
