If x is at least 4 then
5(x - 4) + 20 = -20
5x -20 + 20 = -20
5x = -20 So x = -4. No good, because of the first statement.
Suppose x<4 then 5(4 - x) + 20 = -20
20 - 5x + 20 = -20
60 = 5x, so x=12. No good , because x is supposed to be <4.
The original equation has no solution.
Another way:
5|x-4|+20=-20
5|x-4|=-40
Left is at least 0. Right <0. So no solution.

5(x-4)+20= -20
5(x-4)= -40 (Subtract 20 from -20 which = -40)
(x-4)= -8 (Divide -40 and 5 which = -8)
X= -4 ( -8 + 4 = -4)

You can't change |x-4| with (x-4), it is not correct (of course...it's different :-).
When you check:
5 |-4-4| + 20 = - 20
The absolute of -8 is 8.
5 * 8 + 20 = - 20
40 + 20 = - 20
60 = - 20 : it's wrong.
