most ferret shelters will let you take your ferret with you as long as he is up to date on his shots. Let him pick out his new friend. The only reason you would want to keep them separated is to make sure the new one is not sick, but the shelter probably already did that. Putting them in cages next to each other would probably frustrate them because they would not be able to play together. Good Luck!

We have three ferrets. Usually, ferrets will get along but not always.

Ours are all rescues. The newest one is quite young but also quite strong. He gets on well with our ancient male ferret but attacks our little female ferret so we have to keep them separated.

Here's a link that someone else posted on Yahoo Answers that has a lot of good info:

If you decide to get him, I would keep them in seperate cages for about a week or 2. Put the cages right next to each other so they can see and smell each other. Try letting them out together for play time, but keep them supervised..ferrets do play pretty rough with each other..just keep that in mind.
They should eventually get along fine and you should be able to keep them together all the time.
I did this when I added a second ferret...after the 4th day I had them together permanently...they carried on so much in seperate cages it drove me nuts..they wanted to be together. They were both babies though.

Wow, how many pets do you have? (I was looking at all your other questions.) Well, you should take your ferret to the shelter with you and find one that gets along well with him. That's your best bet. Also you should cage them separately until you're sure that they will be safe together, although you shouldn't have much to worry about.

You should be focused on learning to spell rather than ferrets.
