these icons are there for a reason,for example the anti-virus icons are looking for updates and the broadband icons(including help icons) are looking for updates
allthough users think removing these icons will speed up your start up........ WRONG
the easiest way to speed up start up is to go to the run command and type msconfig
this will give you the configuration utility,go to the start up tab and then untick the programs you dont want at start up,but look careful,check each program and only untick unnessecary programs(quick time,messenger ect)
the volume icon can be removed in control panel>sounds,and the ati/nvidia icons from within their respective control panels
right click the taskbar and select properties and then tick hide inactive icons,this will hide any icons not in use
good luck

you can right click/ close them when they have loaded.

another way is to stop them from starting with the computer...

to do this go to...

start;
run;
type "msconfig"
go to startup
you should get a list of progams.

basically you can get uncheck ones that aren't in c:/windows/sys

for example msn messenger etc, however, on a laptop you may remove a touchpad driver (which is a real pain) and sound drivers (which is confusing!)

also, watch for virus scanners and files/programs that you dont want. such as adware/spyware

Each icon there is placed by the program it belongs to, there's usually an option in that program for a system tray icon, you'll have to go through each one individually and remove them from there.
Some are controlled via the control panel,volume control etc.

those icons means that there is something running in the back round. the only one you need to leave on is your anti-virus. you can leave on volume control since it is only a shortcut.

other things can be turned off permanently buy going to run type in msconfig. go to the start up tab and turn things off. leave your anti-virus alone but all others can go bye bye. your computer will speed up and those little things will go away.

right click them and hit exit ... if you want to permanently remove them ... run msconfig from the run line and edit them out of the start up :)
