Everyone stop saying the Da Vinci Code, it's an alright book but every time I see this question it's pretty much a guarantee that someone will say it.
If you like non-fiction that reads like fiction, try "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson, or "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote.
Also, check out David Sedaris and David Foster Wallace, great stuff.

The golden compass... It's a kids book but it's like Harry Potter in the way that older people can enjoy it even more. It was recommended to me and it's awesome! I can't remember the author though but definitly ask for it. It's well known.
Also I'm reading Tai-pan right now by James Clavell. It's really good!! (^_^)

If you like science fiction, then I'd recommend any book by Ray Bradbury.
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" is a personal favorite of mine, and it's an amazing read.
