NASA mostly hires engineers in the fields of electrical, electronics, aerospace, and computers. There are lots of different sub-fields such as computer modelling or power systems, or radar or robotics or communications that you could think about specializing in. Go to NASA's website and look at the types of jobs that they are recruiting for. Also check out the various Defense websites, especially Navy.

There are lots...I had a job offer doing contract work that I turned down because the money wasn't as good. Also, the layoff cycles can be brutal. Look at companies that are getting NASA contracts, also.

Take enough programming that you can do either hardware or software. My preference would have been embedded programming, but it's also nice to be versatile and employed!

Worked for NASA some years back. Aerospace engineering. would be your best bet.

I'd vote for aeronautical engineering.
