It's like "wow! you fooled us! we didn't think you were coming back out for another 1 or 2 songs like every other concert i've been to!"

you guys are idiots. it's not like an encore isn't planned into the setlist and spontaneous due to the crowd's cheering

This is so the crowd feels like they got the band to do more than what they paid for. I agree though, it's kind of like going to the bakery and the baker tells you that he's going to do you a favor and frost the cake you just purchased.

I think encores are planned and expected, but I have been to concerts where it seemed like the band went off the prepared set and played longer than usual. But who knows? This could have been planned as well. It is supposed to show appreciation for the audience, or at least give the impression that it was unplanned and based solely on the response they received.

It strokes their ego, and it makes the concert seem longer.

1 1/2 concert seems shorter than a 1 hour concert with 2 ten minute encore performances.

WOW!!! They came back out twice after they were finished!!!

Understand what I mean???

Thanks for the 2 points!!!

As the crowd claps and cheers for more .. the band comes out for the encore to show their appreciation to the audience.

GREAT QUESTION!!!!!
I seen a local band in my area...after they "finished". They all stood off to the side and were waiting.
Everyone started leaving...then they came back out like they were being asked for an encore!
I often wondered why also...and it is planned.

If a band knows what's good for them they do that hahaha. Actually it's curtosy. If the crowd enjoyed the band and didn't boo them and paid such money, I think it's a good gesture to repay with an extra song.

Good bands do encores because the audience wants more. Shitty bands do encores because they wish that they were good bands.
