Pay before any deduction (tax, insurance premium, whatever), it is the part that the employer gives, and the employee only gets a part of.
Either that, or you get a job and getting paid for eating worms or something gross like that.

Gross pay refers to the exact amount of a paycheck, what is available before federal and state taxes are taken out, along with other incidentals. Gross is what you actually earned in a pay period; NET pay is what you receive after all deductions.

It is how much you are paid before you get taxed
if your gross pay is $100 and you get taxed $20 you have a NET pay of $80
you never actually recieve your GROSS pay, your boss pays the TAX to the government and you recieve only the NET pay =(

Gross pay is what your earnings are BEFORE any deductions are taken out for social security, taxes, insurance, etc.
So if you have an annual salary of say, $36,000, your gross monthly pay is $3000. Your take-home pay, or net pay, will likely be a smaller amount assuming you're having taxes taken out.
