Raw sewage backed up in my home causing damages. The backup occurred due to damaged pipes off my property. What laws govern are applicable to recovering damages? It happened in Maryland. Any useful sites would be helpful.

Check with the Public Works Department in your County or City.

I would contact first the sewer company that does your sewer. If the repairs at your home have been done, you need to make a copy of the bill for you water board. Find out when their meetings are and attend. Start there. If you are lucky, the board will say OK and pay it. If not, you may have to pursue it further.

Without knowing your specific situation as far are city/well/MUD; sewer system or private septic it is difficult to answer this question specifically.

Your homeowners insurance should have a provision for things like that. It isnt considered the cities fault, its considered an act of god.
