More gas? A hybrid. More fuel in general? A diesel.

I you are seeking MPG, - it would depend on the size of the engine, - as "hybrid" car could use a diesel too (after all it is an engine!) And of course diesel fuel is different than gas (fuel).

That would really depend upon a lot more than just the weight of the vehicle; engine sizes, etc would come in to play as well as the vehicle design. Some hybrids are designed to improve power especially at lower speeds, not so much to improve economy.

There's no way to say one would be theoritically better than the other.

A diesel uses diesel fuel, no gas(oline).

The currently available production hybrids all use gasoline as their only fuel source.

So if you are just asking about gasoline, then the hybrid uses more, as a diesel uses a different fuel.

If you were asking about which uses more petroleum-based fuel (so overall fuel economy), then it depends on many factors - which hybrid vehicle and which diesel vehicle you are using for your comparison. Obviously you'd want to use the same size/market class vehicle, and a standardized fuel economy test for your comparison. Depening on where you live, you can compare vehicles' fuel economy at:
US: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/
Canada: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportation/personal/
UK: http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/

Best fuel economy per size class:
US 2006: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/best/bestworstNF.shtml and http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/best/bestworstEPAtrucksNF.shtml
Canada 2006: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportation/personal/pdfs/most-efficient-vehicles-2006.pdf

If you are looking for a US vehicle that has the lowest emissions AND the best fuel economy, see the Green Vehicle Guide: http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicle/
Here you can also search by vehicle type (such as small car, station wagon, minivan, SUV, etc.)

Note that the diesels are much worse at emissions than their gasoline counterparts, and that the hybrids are usually even cleaner than their gasoline-only counterparts.
