aside from being louder are there any positive or adverse effects from chopping the pipes on this era of bike?

this is kind of a science project bike. granted I like to ride it and want it to last a while but I am mostly learning the art of motorcycle repair, tuning and maintenence with this bike. also keep in mind that it only cost me $500. not bad for a bike that runs.

Depending on the length of the pipes now you are probably going to lose some horses. You will have to re-jet the carbs if you haven't already. If you are seeking more horses try taking the 27mm carbs and either boring them out to 30mm or replacing them with the 30mm. (If memory serves me they should be Venturi carbs). Make sure you have run a vacuum test on them to equally them out.
If you are learning about bike repair you should study up on back pressure. If you lose to much power and still want to keep the pipes try putting a back pressure pin in the pipes. The pipes need to be the same length from jug to end. measure from the end up about 4 inches and drill a 3/8" hole in the back side or underside and Tap in a 3/8" stainless rod just long enough to touch the other side then tig it in place. This will create a small amount of back pressure without losing the effect of straight pipes.
At $500 you can't go to far wrong in learning on it.

heres the deal, you now have a lean condition which will make it run hot and lose power off the line. you now need bigger main jets to compensate and taske away your lean condition.What you should have done is bought an actual set of drag pipes for it. then you would have the straight pipe with the proper tuned length. by the way open pipes do make more power but only at wide open throttle.[thats why there called drag pipes.] they dont begin to flow untill you wack the throttle open all the way.

If you re-jet you'll run right and actually make more power, but you're still hurting your engine.
Anyone who says straight pipes don't make power obviously doesn't know anything. Look at NHRA drag racing- straight pipes! And they some of the most powerful internal combustion engines ever produced. Landspeed record cars, drag racing motorcycles- they all have straight pipes. It makes more power when tuned right. But, those engines get rebuilt for every hour of work, tho, because it actually hurts your engine to open pipes (depending on how short).
I would re-jet once your get the chance.

It may run hot, being that you have just changed the flow with no back pressure, you need to re adjust or rejet the carb. Also put a K&N filter on it so it will breath better.

Yep... The local cops are going to bust you for excessive noise, and since you've just ruined the only set of original equipment pipes in captivity that will fit your bike, you'll have to scrap it.

You will need larger jets to compensate for a now lean condition and a loss of power, or you'll have less power, and eventually melt a hole in your piston.

more air out,you need more air in,put a k&n air filter in and drill a couple holes in airbox intake... resynch carbs to adjust air/fuel ratio. correct about loudness and cops,but if you chopped pipes, i guess you wanted it louder!! good luck.
