I think Tracer hit the nail right on the head with his definition. It is an umbrella term for both transsexuals and crossdressers. As for why we are listed with gay, lesbian, and bisexual, why not? They have certainly been a lot more understanding and welcoming to us than the heterosexual community has. Sure, there are exceptions, but I would wager that most straight people think that all transgenders are gay and vice versa. We know better, of course, but if it keeps some of the mean little snots that seem to thrive in a relatively anonymous atmosphere like Answers out of our hair, then so much the better.

As the others have said... transgendered means to be living the opposite physcial gender as what you were born as. A transgender persons mind and soul do not fit their biological bodies and so they dress, act and sometimes have surgical correction so their outside fits their inside.
The reason they are grouped with LGB is because ...
1. the live and let live attitude
2. they are outcasts of straight society just as LGB have been for decades
3. They have stood with LGB, African American, women and other minority groups working towards equality
4. they accept us as we are
5. They were a large part of the stonewall riots that gave homosexuals many of the freedoms we have today.
6. Most are homosexual either before they change gender or are considered homosexual after they change
( If a bio female is lesbian before her change she would then be heterosexual after the change. If a bio female is heterosexual before her change she would then be homosexual after the change and visa versa with a bio male that decided to change).
7. They are individuals and as a LGB community we try to accept everyone that accepts us

Yes - if transgendered is someone trapped in the wrong sex - what does that have to do with sleeping with the same sex. Transgendered are not gay or lesbian - just confused.
